Once More, With Feeling: Recent Progress in the Study of Moral Development

Handbook of Moral Development
Edited by Melanie Killen and Judith Smetana. Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum, 2006. xvi + 790 pp. Cloth, $195.

In the not too distant past, moral development research was a field of interest and excitement in developmental psychology. Lawrence Kohlberg's theory spurred controversy and research, and the field owes much to him. Indeed, the last handbook of moral development, edited by Kurtines and Gewirtz (1991), was dedicated to Kohlberg's memory and was a tribute to his valued contributions. Since Kohlberg's untimely death in 1987, however, the field has undergone dramatic transformations, and therefore a new comprehensive handbook is long overdue.
