Digital Biology: How Nature Is Transforming Our Technology and Our Lives
By Peter J. Bentley. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2001. 272 pp. Cloth, $25.

Peter Bentley is an honorary research fellow in computer science at University College London, working in evolutionary design and computation. His book depicts a future world where computers can create universes in which are living biological forms that reproduce, grow and think. Computers become greenhouses for new kinds of nature: Digital immune systems detect hackers, ants solve scheduling problems, seashells compose new music, and so on. This, and much more, is evolutionary computing.
