Comparing School Mathematics

Experiencing School Mathematics
By Jo Boaler. Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum, 2002. 202 pp. Paper, $22.50.

Experiencing School Mathematics is a carefully described study of the curriculum, teaching, and student reactions from two schools in England. Boaler describes interactions with teachers and students, observations of classroom discourses, and the overall environment of each school and its surrounding community. Out of that she builds discussions dealing with student knowledge, student beliefs, learning styles, ability grouping, and gender issues. Blended throughout the book is a discussion of relevant research.
