A Legal View of the Most Inflammatory Word in American Race Relations

Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word
By Randall Kennedy. New York: Pantheon, 2002. 227 pp. Cloth, $22.00.

This concise volume calmly and incisively analyses the ultimate derogatory term used by white racists to describe African Americans. Although it barely makes use of highly relevant psychological contributions, this brief, literate, and provocative book may well interest many psychologists who specialize in intergroup relations and psycholinguistics.
