Do You See What I See?

Principles of Cognition, Language and Action: Essays on the Foundations of a Science of Psychology
By Niri Praetorius. Dordrecht, The Netherlands: Kluwer, 2000. 492 pp. Cloth, $240; paper, $55.

The very detailed analysis presented in this book revisits fundamental propositions that underpin the discipline of psychology, especially those that interrelate cognition, language, and action. Rather than taking foundational propositions for granted, the author looks closely and critically at the evidence that links humans to one another and to reality through language. The book reasons that we cannot understand human behavior and understanding without accurate knowledge of the capabilities and limitations that result from the relationship between language and reality. To address this relationship, the book explores fundamental issues of mind and matter that are widely recognized problematics in psychology and philosophy.
